Trial for alternate approach and plans for solar farm

Trial for alternate approach and plans for solar farm

Increased numbers of flights now summer is here

At the beginning of June 2024, flight arrivals at Biggin Hill Airport increased considerably from previous levels.  David Winstanley, CEO of BHAL said this was due to a combination of circumstances: firstly, the prevailing winds at the time required aircraft to use runway 03 (R03); secondly, over the weekend of the Champions Cup Final, flights were arriving from all over Europe.

Keston Village were particularly adversely affected as their NSA (Noise Sensitive Area) was repeatedly overflown.  As a result, many complaints were lodged with BHAL.  Their response, as to why the pilots appeared to be oblivious to (or ignored) the existence of the NSA, is awaited.

Trial of alternative approach route to Runway 03

We are informed that in an effort to reduce the impact of the use of R03, BHAL is to commence a six-month trial starting in late September 2024, using an alternative approach route for fixed wing aircraft arrivals.

Solar Farm Development by BHAL

We have been advised by some residents of Biggin Hill they are concerned about the possible installation of a solar array on the agricultural land on Milking Lane Farm, which is owned by BHAL and which lies behind Downe Road and the main road A233.  While it is accepted that solar power is a positive step to reducing particulate pollution and dependency on fossil fuels, it is questionable whether such an array directly behind residents’ houses is reasonable.  The local community will not benefit as the electricity generated will be used exclusively by the Airport. Existing footpaths crossing the land may be obstructed by the installation or diverted around it.  Also, it is feared that the development will have a negative impact on the character of the landscape.

We would appreciate feedback from those of you who have views on this proposal.

As mentioned in our previous newsletter, there is also the proposal by BHAL for the release of approximately 60 acres of Green Belt designated land, for inclusion within the Strategic Outer London Development Centre (SOLDC) area which they want to come under the Airport’s control.

Council meeting to discuss BHAL Noise Action Plan Review

Finally, please ensure you remember to attend the Civic Centre, Stockwell Close, Bromley on Monday 16th September for the ERCPDS council meeting and also the Executive meeting on Wednesday 18th September when the NAP revision is on the Agenda.  Both meetings start at 7pm.
